Understanding the Stages of Male Pattern Baldness

    Last updated 20 days ago

If you witnessed your father or maternal grandfather experience male pattern baldness (MPB), you might be at risk for premature hair loss as well. The Hamilton Norwood Scale was created in the 1950s to outline the seven stages of anterior and vertex male pattern baldness. The scale features photos of each stage so men can match their symptoms to the stages in the chart. Today, the Norwood Scale is commonly used by doctors to help determine what treatment options are right for their patients suffering from MPB.  If you’re experiencing any stage of MPB, talk to your doctor about treatment options that can restore hair growth.

Stages of Anterior Male Pattern Baldness

If you suffer from anterior MPB, you will most likely notice your hair receding on both sides of the forehead, creating a point in the middle of the forehead. As the pattern baldness continues, the widow’s peak will thin out until the top half of the head is bald. As you enter stage five and six, you’ll notice a bald ring forming a few inches above the ears. That ring will become narrower as you enter stage seven, the last stage of anterior male pattern baldness.

Stages of Vertex Male Pattern Baldness

Vertex MPB differs in that it begins at the crown of the head and moves outward. Once the widow’s peak forms, you’ll also experience hair recession in the middle of the scalp. As you enter stages three and five, you’ll notice your hair receding from the forehead and the crown, leaving a thin strip of hair in the middle of the scalp. This thin strip recedes until a ring is left a few inches above the ears and around the nape of the neck.

A Timeline of Results You Can Expect from Laser Hair Restoration

    Last updated 28 days ago

Millions of men and women suffer from premature hair loss and pattern baldness, which can cause a slump in self-esteem. Fortunately, advanced laser technology is helping people regain their confidence and regrow their hair. Read on to find out how fast you can expect to see results from your laser hair restoration treatment:

     The First Six Weeks

Following their first laser hair restoration treatment, many patients begin noticing a change in their hair and scalp. Many report feeling shinier and livelier hair; a healthier and more moisturized scalp; and a reduction in hair shedding. In the following weeks, the scalp’s health will continue to improve and the hair will begin to grow. According to clinical data, more than 40% of patients notice some hair growth within the first eight weeks.

     Week 8 through Week 12

Most patients begin experiencing the full benefits and results of laser hair restoration after two months of treatment. Results for most patients include an interruption of hair loss, significant hair regrowth, thicker and shinier hair, and more manageable hair.

     After 12 Weeks

The laser hair restoration treatment process is designed to produce 20% hair regrowth and a reduction in hair shedding after just 12 weeks. However, some patients will need to continue undergoing treatment to achieve full results. During treatment, have a friend or relative inspect your scalp for results, as it can be difficult to see hair growth when it occurs on the top of the head. If you don’t achieve your desired results within 12 weeks, don’t get discouraged. Some patients need a full 20 weeks or more to notice full results.
